Same question comes up constantly at daycare pickup and in vet waiting rooms: my dog’s getting older, which bed is actually worth it versus just having “orthopedic” slapped on the label.
The real difference is foam that holds its shape under weight versus a cushion that compresses flat and stays that way. A lot of beds get called orthopedic that don’t really do the first thing.
Size matters more than most people think going in. Measure your dog lying down stretched out, add some margin. Too small and they hang off the edge, and then the support barely matters.

If the idea of raised sides to lean against (rather than a flat mat) sounds closer to what your dog needs, it might be worth bookmarking for later.

Flat mats are easier to climb onto. Raised sides give a dog something to rest against once they’re down. Which one fits depends more on how your dog actually lies down than on which has the better star rating.
